An exhibition of story boxes and original theatre designs by set designer Neil Murray
opens at the gallery on May 1 2021.
Neil Murray is an award winning Theatre Designer who, throughout a long career has worked all over Britain and internationally.
This unique exhibition of story boxes is a result of a year spent in lockdown following the closure of theatres in March 2020 when work for actors, directors and designers came to an abrupt end.
Neil, a former associate director/designer of Northern Stage, says the idea grew out of his love for Victorian Narrative paintings.
"Things are happening in these paintings and in the boxes; events unfold and clues are given but it is up to the viewer to make sense of the component parts and tell the story".
Neil's Story Boxes are a modern take on the Victorian versions, often featuring bright jewel colours.
The exhibition, which runs until July 3, also includes original costume and set designs from Neil's work for theatres across the world including London's West End and Broadway.
Neil will be at the gallery for the opening on May 1, 10am - 4pm. Please pop along to say hello and grab a coffee with him.
Original paintings and prints by internationally renowned artist Peter Podmore can be viewed and purchased from the gallery.
Peter, who recently held a successful exhibition at Gallery@no6 lives and works in North Northumberland. He has a studio workshop nearby at Westnewton in the foothills of The Cheviots.
“I was delighted to be able to show my work in this incredible space, it is such a lovely gallery with excellent light and ample space for people to view and at the same time socially distance.”
The gallery comprises a large white wooden-panelled room and the smaller ‘staircase gallery’ (located the top of the stairs). The available space is very flexible and can be used as a whole or separately.
The staircase gallery is occasionally available on a short term basis, as a manageable space for local artists to use, depending on what is going on in the main gallery.
Social distancing during coronavirus is easy in this airy space, and your comfort is important to us.
Let us know if you have any questions.
